We will be begin practice sessions for the Putnam exam next week.
The Putnam is a nationwide mathematics competition open to all
undergraduates, held the first Saturday in December. First prize
is a graduate fellowship to Harvard! But the questions are very
challenging -- and very cool. Here is a recent sample:
"Let f be a real-valued function on the plane such that for
every square ABCD in the plane, f(A) + f(B) + f(C) + f(D) = 0.
Does it follow that f(P) = 0 for all points P in the plane?"
We will have practice sessions for the Putnam exam every Thursday
this semester, 5:30 - 7pm in RLM 9.166, starting Thursday Sept 29.
Pizza, the dinner of champions, will be served.
For more information or to register for the competition, please
