Gregory D. Foley is the Robert L. Morton Professor of Mathematics Education at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. Greg obtained BA and MA degrees in mathematics and a PhD in mathematics education from The University of Texas at Austin. He has taught basic arithmetic through graduate-level mathematics, as well as upper division and graduate-level mathematics education classes. Foley has held fulltime faculty positions at North Harris County College, Austin Community College, The Ohio State University, Sam Houston State University, and Appalachian State University, and served as Senior Scientist for Secondary School Mathematics Improvement at the Austin Independent School District in Austin, Texas. His research, curriculum development, and teacher professional development have focused on incorporating technology and inquiry into mathematics instruction in Grades 6-14. He is currently studying mathematics language acquisition and developing curriculum materials for a fourth- year high school capstone mathematics course for the average student. Foley first experienced the Moore method as a student in classes with Carl Pixley, Mike Starbird, Bill Eaton, Steve Armentrout, Jack Roach, Simon Bernau, and W. T. Guy, Jr., and has taught several classes using this approach. This spring he is teaching a formal course in number theory for the first time.
