The culmination of the sessions is an exercise to make your own redistricting plan of Travis County, focusing on three possible races: the county commission (4 districts), the state representatives (6 districts), and the Austin city council (10 districts).

Thursday February 1
  • 9am introductions, coffee, and last-minute downloads
  • 9:30 presentation by Tommy Miller (Travis County Voter Registration Division) about use of GIS by election officials
  • 10:15 intro to GIS presentation: Anita Palmer (GISetc) and Mark Stewart (ESRI)
  • 11:15 intro to GIS presentation (part II): Megan Gall (Thurgood Marshall Institute)
  • noon-1:30 lunch
  • 1:30-3 breakout sessions: hands-on GIS
  • 3-4 presentation by James Santucci (Azavea) on DistrictBuilder software
  • 4-4:30 presentation by Blake Esselstyn (FrontWater) on Dave's Redistricting App
  • 4:30-5 presentation by Mary Barker (Wash U) on python with GIS
  • 6-7:30pm Math discussion - where is the research frontier? (RLM building, room 9.116 on the 9th floor)
Friday February 2

  • 10am presentation by Peck Young (Austin Community College) on balancing stakeholder priorities in city redistricting
  • 11am presentation by Stewart Berry and Tracy Horgan (Caliper) on Maptitude for Redistricting
