Topic: Proofs Without Words
Textbook: Nelson, Proofs Without Words: Exercises in Visual Thinking, Mathematical Association of America, 1993
What are proofs without words? They are
not really proofs – they are diagrams that give you the main
ideas of a proof. In many cases, they are the final diagram that
you are left with after you have proved something, but the steps and
the words are left out. You need to figure out the steps and supply the
words (the reasoning) to make a complete proof.
Many students feel lost or intimidated when they are expected to prove
things themselves. Proofs without words are a good way to start doing
proofs, since the diagram provides you with a framework that can get
you started.
Class format: Most classes will be spent with students guiding the class in understanding proofs created from diagrams in the textbook.
What I expect from you: I expect you to:
• Work hard and actively to deepen your understanding of the mathematics topics we study in this class.
• When it is your turn to guide the class, prepare carefully to do so in a way that fosters learning.
• Participate actively (minds-on) when others are guiding the class.
Grading:
Grades will be based on quality of preparation and performance in
guiding the class when it is your turn to guide, and on class
participation when others are guiding.
