I. Read Section 4.4. This should be review of material from M 362K, but
is important for understanding some aspects of statistics. The Rules for Variances are particulary important to understand. Added 12 noon
Sunday, February 19: You may also want to review and bring to class the first
two pages of the handout Properties of the Correlation Coefficient,
from Monday, January 30.
II. Do the following exercises to reinforce reading and for possible
class disscussion: 4.61, 4.62, 4.63, 4.64, 4.67, 4.69, 4.70,
4.72, 4.77
III. Read Section 4.5. This should be review of some basic probability.
The most important part for our purposes is conditional probability
(especially the distinction between P(A|B) and P(B|A)) and
independence.
IV. Do the following exercises to reinforce reading and for possible
class discussion: 4.86, 4.87, 4.90, 4.91, 4.96, 4.97, 4.98,
4.100, 4.101, 4.102.
