M 358K Assignment for Monday, February 27:
Please Note: Students who will be called on today are those whose last names begin with A - K.
I. Hand in Term Project Proposal
II. Review any exercises from last Monday's assignment (Sections 4.4 and 4.5) that we did not get to then or Wednesday.
II. Read pp. 332 - 349.
- You should have seen some of this material (especially
binomial distributions, the normal approximation to the binomial, and
maybe the distribution of proportions) in M 362K. However, since most
students forget a lot of it, and this reading may present it from a
different perspective, and the ideas here are crucial building blocks for statistical inference, be sure to take the time to read this section carefully,
- The concept of sampling distribution is very important in
statistics. Remember the examples we have already looked at (and listed
in a chart) earlier in the semester using online simulations: The
number of successes in a sample of 33, with probability of success 1/3;
the mean of a sample from various distributions; the sample standard
deviation (but dividing by n instead of n-1), and the sample standard
deviation (dividing by n-1 to get an unbiased estimator.)
- As usual, learning terminology is important.
III. Do the following exercises to reinforce reading and for possible class discussion: 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 5.5, 5.7, 5.8, 5.17
