M396C: MATHEMATICS AS PROBLEM SOLVING


Unique number: 59155        (Meets with M360M)

Time and Place: TTH 2 - 3:30 p.m., RLM 5.114.

Intended Audience: Well qualified students interested in teaching mathematics at the secondary, middle school, elementary, or two-year college level.
 
Prerequisites: A bachelor's degree in mathematics (or the equivalent in mathematics courses) plus graduates standing and permission of the instructor. Graduate students
who do not have the equivalent of a bachelor's degree in mathematics should register for M360M instead of M396C.
 
Course Description: Individual and group problem solving, along with readings from the process strands of the Principles and Standards for School Mathematics, plus discussion of problem solving heuristics and strategies, and of methods of evaluating problem solving. Reasoning, communicating mathematics, mathematical representations, and connections between various mathematical topics will be emphasized.
