1. Read the first day handout at http://www.ma.utexas.edu/users/mks/384Gfa08/384G08syl.html. You are responsible for the information on this handout.
2. Try using Arc: Either download your own copy from
http://www.stat.umn.edu/arc/ or
try it on one of the math department computer labs. See pp. 545-547 of
the
text for basic information on Arc. If you use a math department
lab
computer, see the first day handout for information on opening Arc.
3. Read Sections 1.1 — 1.7 of the textbook, being sure to try the
Arc examples yourself. Except for the computing details, the material
in
Section 1.7, and most of the material in Sections 1.4 - 1.6, should be
familiar.
4. Try copying and pasting (both text and graphics) from Arc to a word processor. (See the first day handout for accessing Microsoft Word if you are using a math department computer.) Try printing a document containing both text and a graphic you have pasted or imported.

5. Read the Preface and Section 1.8 of the text.
6. Look at the website http://www.stat.umn.edu/arc/. (It has additional items related to Arc.)
7. Try Exercise 1.4 on p. 25
8. Read and try a few things from Appendix A of the text.
