MATH 241: Calculus III, Multivariable and Vector Calculus

Homeworks: Weekly assignments due one week from handout date.


Exams: Four one-hour midterm exams and a final exam. The tentative dates for the midterms are

• Exam #4, 05/08/97
• Final Exam, 05/16/97, 1:30-3:30pm

Mathematica: The mathematical software package Mathematica will be used in this course. Typically, a few problems in each homework will be designated as Mathematica Problems which are to be solved using the software. Also, there may be a few questions on the exams dealing with Mathematica. Please note that students are expected to solve homework problems not designated as Mathematica problems by hand; that is, without the use of Mathematica. Grading: Homeworks 15%, Midterm Exams 15%, Final Exam 25%

Topics

This course will cover Chapters 11-15 of Calculus with Analytic Geometry, except for sections 12.7, 13.7 and 14.7, and will cover selected topics from Multivariable Calculus with Mathematica. The basic topics to be covered in the course include
Cartesian Coordinates and Vectors in Space
Representation of Lines and Planes in Space
Vector-Valued Functions and Space Curves
Functions of Several Variables
Optimization and Lagrange Multipliers
Multiple Integrals and Change of Variable Formulas
Line and Surface Integrals
Classic Theorems of Vector Calculus

Miscellaneous

Make-Up Policy: Make-up examinations will be given only in the case of an absence caused by illness, religious observance, participation in a University activity at the request of University authorities, or compelling circumstances beyond the student's control.
