email: mwilliams@math.utexas.edu Textbook: Elementary Differential Equations and Boundary Value Problems, by Boyce and DiPrima, 8th Edition. Syllabus: Most of chapters 1-5, 7, and 10 and parts of chapter 9. We will NOT be covering Laplace transforms (chapter 6). Attendance: Attendance and participation in lecture and in discussion section is mandatory. Homework and exams: There will be weekly problem sets, listed below. These will be collected every Thursday in discussion section. Homework will frequently use MATLAB. Math department computer accounts are easily obtained. Just go to a lab and sign in using your EID. The only restriction is that you can't print more than 300 pages during the semester. >
Exams: There will be three in-class midterm exams, on February 6, March 7, and April 30, plus a final exam. These exams will all be closed book. However, each student will be allowed to bring a single letter-sized ``crib sheet'' (2-sided) to each midterm, and 2 crib sheets to the final. These notes must be HANDWRITTEN ORIGINALS - NO XEROXING ALLOWED. Calculators are NOT allowed on the exams unless I specifically say otherwise.
Grading: Each midterm counts 20%. The final exam counts 40%. The homework counts 20%. At the end of the term I will drop your lowest 20%. The final grade distribution is based on the same standards as for a regular section of M427K. Since you are honor students, that should mean that most students will get A's. Honor system approved by an almost unanimous vote! Two people abstained and one voted "no" on the honor system. 5 people expressed reservations aboutreporting their classmates. Everybody else voted "yes" and "yes". Disabilities: The University of Texas at Austin provides upon request appropriate academic accommodations for qualified students with disabilities.
