"That's Not My Knot!"
featuring Nick Zufelt

On October 27, 2013, Nick Zufelt of the University of Texas led a workshop on the mathematics of knots. Students learned about how we can attach numbers and characteristics to knots to help us tell when two knots are different. The group started by making some knots out of string, and exploring how it can be difficult to tell when two knots are the same or different just by looking at them. To help solve this problem, students learned to calculate characteristics of different knots, like the linking number and their tri-colorability. With these tools in hand, students were able to categorize knots by these characteristics, and to tell, in at least some cases, when two knots are really different.
