"Mathematical Trickery"
featuring T.R. Geng, with special guest Sara Cohen

After summer vacation, it usually takes a lot of work to make the Sunday Math Circle reappear—but on September 14, 2014, all it took was a little sleight of hand. Graduate student T.R. Geng, assisted by mysteriously familiar local teacher Sara Cohen, challenged us to uncover the math behind three magic tricks. With no formulas or instructions to guide us, we didn't think we had much hope of pulling the pair's complicated coin manipulations and card-guessing feats out of our hats, but they pointed out that their routines didn't pop into existence fully formed. We found that in magic, like in math, starting small and working upward is sometimes all it takes to do what looks impossible.
