SMMG – September 2017

Date: Saturday, September 23, 2017

Time: 10 AM – Noon

Location: RLM 4.102 (On the UT campus)

Speaker: Sean Carney

Title: Introduction to nonlinear dynamics and chaos.

Abstract: We will explore some basic concepts from the field of nonlinear dynamics, such as stable and unstable equilibrium, sensitivity to initial conditions, and chaos by examining a simple function called the logistic map. Using numerous examples and some computer animations, we try to understand why, for instance, it is so difficult to accurately predict the weather. Addition: You can find the presentation and code for figures on the bottom of Sean's website here!
