	SMMG – September 2017 Date: Saturday, September 23, 2017 Time: 10 AM – Noon Location: RLM 4.102 (On the UT campus) Speaker: Sean Carney Title: Introduction to nonlinear dynamics and chaos. Abstract: We will explore some basic concepts from the field of nonlinear dynamics, such as stable and unstable equilibrium, sensitivity to initial conditions, and chaos by examining a simple function called the logistic map. Using numerous examples and some computer animations, we try to understand why, for instance, it is so difficult to accurately predict the weather. 	The AMC 8 Date Date: Tuesday, November 14, 2017 Time: 6:30 – 7:10pm Location: UTC 3.104 (On the UT campus, note the different room!) The exam is 40-minutes long and may be taken by any student in grades 8 and below. UT will cover the cost of the exam as long as you preregister.

Speaker: Ngoc Mai Tran Abstract: Can you remember a place years after, even though you only visited it once? Can you get to new places just by "going in the right direction"? What sort of mathematics do our brains use to solve these problems? Come and find out?
