Time: Noon – 2PM Location: RLM 4.102 (On the UT campus) Speaker: Tom Gannon Title: Everything You've Ever Wanted to Know About Infinity Abstract: Have you ever wondered if you could make an (infinitely long) list of all the numbers there are, including numbers like 1.815 and -3.1415926535...? This and many more things will be discussed at the FIRST EVER SATURDAY MORNING MATH CIRCLE of the 2018 school year! We're going to discuss how to prove, without any possibility of any shadow of a doubt, that there are MORE THAN ONE type of infinity. No prerequisites are required! |

SMMG – October 2018Date: Sunday, October 14, 2018
Time: 10am – Noon Location: RLM 4.102 (On the UT campus) Speaker: Arun Debray Title: The Card Game SET and Its Mathematics Abstract: SET is a card game which tests one's pattern recognition and fast reflexes. Though it wasn't designed to be a mathematical game, natural questions about SET can be reinterpreted in terms of geometry and combinatorics. In this talk, we'll discuss these questions and prove a few answers. |

Date: Saturday, October 20, 2018
Time: 10am – Noon Location: RLM 4.102 (On the UT campus) Speaker: David Hormuth Title: Math, magnets, and mice! Abstract: Computational Oncology is a relatively new field using mathematical and computational approaches to study how tumors grow and respond to treatment. In this talk, we will discuss how math can be used study cancer and how medical images combined with mathematical models can be used to provide personalized tumor "forecasts". David Hormuth kindly provided a pdf of the slides in his talk here |

Date: Sunday, October 28, 2018
Time: 10am – Noon Location: RLM 4.102 (On the UT campus) Speaker: Peter Burton Title: How (not) to gamble Abstract: There are lots of opportunities around to risk money for a chance to make money. How can a person decide what's a good bet? We'll discuss some basic examples of games of chance and describe methods for analyzing the risks and rewards involved. One highlight will be a game with an infinite expected payoff - which is nevertheless a terrible idea to play! |

SMMG – November 2018Date: Sunday, November 4th, 2018
Time: Noon – 2PM Location: RLM 4.102 (On the UT campus) Speaker: Neža Žager Korenjak Title: The Towers of Hanoi Abstract: Long ago in a distant land, there was a monastery. In the middle of the monastery there stood three giant pegs. The middle one was adorned with a tower of 64 golden discs stacked one atop another. The monks of that monastery were entrusted the following task: to once per day choose a single disc and move it from one peg to another. In doing this, only one rule must be followed: there can never be a bigger disc atop a smaller one. Once all the discs are moved to the rightmost peg, the world will end. How worried should we be about this impending doom? What interesting math things about the monks' task can we say while we await the end? |

SMMG – December 2018Date: Saturday, Decmeber 8th, 2018
Time: 10am – Noon Location: RLM 4.102 (On the UT campus) Speaker: Kai Nakamura Title: Slide rules Abstract: Do you remember learning arithmetic as a kid and asking your teacher what was the point of learning this if we can just use a calculator? Your teacher probably responded with something like "Well you won't always have a calculator in your pocket". Pretty funny considering how now everyone is carrying around a phone that can do so much more than your old TI-83 ever could. Well what did people do before we had cellphones in our pockets, calculators, or even computers? We'll discuss an old fashioned mechanical calculator of sorts. |
