SMMG – September 2019

Date: September 15, 2019

Time: 12pm-2pm

Location: RLM 5.104

Speaker: Dr. Jennifer Mann Austin

Title: Strawberries, Bands, and Knots

Abstract: …DNA can bend, twist, and writhe, can be knotted, catenated, and supercoiled (positive and negative), can be in A, B, and Z helical forms, and can breathe. ‑Arthur Kornberg

In this session, we will see the amount of DNA in a strawberry as we appreciate the packaging challenges within cells, explore the topology of DNA, and learn how cells deal with DNA entanglements.

SMMG – September 2019

Date: September 29, 2019

Time: 12pm-2pm

Location: RLM 5.104

Speaker: Cas Monroe

Title: Combinatorial Game Theory

Abstract: We're going to talk about how the math behind counting can help us learn how to say that certain games, like Connect 4, can always be won by the first player. We're going to demonstrate by playing a fun game called Nim!

SMMG – October 2019

Date: October 13, 2019

Time: 12pm-2pm

Location: RLM 5.104

Speaker: Tom Gannon

Title: Ramsey Theory

Abstract: We'll discuss a question on the different kinds of patterns that emerge when we look at the different ways that people in a group can all know or not know each other. This will allow us to understand a math question that mathematicians don't know the answer to and are trying to solve!

TBD

SMMG – October 2019

Date: October 27, 2019

Time: 12pm-2pm

Location: RLM 5.104

Speaker: Dr. Philip Yasskin

Title: The Diagonals Problem

Abstract: Math is about finding patterns in places you didn't expect to find them. We will investigate how many diagonals can be drawn in a grid of squares so that no two diagonals touch, and see what cool patterns we can find!

TBD

SMMG – November 2019

Date: November 10, 2019

Time: 12pm-2pm

Location: RLM 5.104

Speaker: Teddy Weisman

Title: Geometry on Spheres

Abstract: A lot of people know about geometry on the plane, but did you know you could also do geometry on the surface of a ball?! We'll talk about what this means and how it applies to things like map making.

Date: November 24, 2019

Time: 12pm-2pm

Location: RLM 4.102

Speaker: Dr. Ngoc Mai Tran

Title: Math in Neuroscience

Abstract: How do neuroscientists "see" what neurons do in our brains? And why is it such a hard math problem? Come and find out!

SMMG – December 2019

Date: December 8, 2019

Time: 12pm-2pm

Location: RLM 4.102

Speaker: Professor Michael Starbird

Title: Geometric Gems

Abstract: Plain plane geometry contains some of the most beautiful insights and proofs ever—-some dating from ancient times and some created by living mathematicians. This interactive session will include some of my favorites from old and new proofs of the Pythagorean Theorem to truly elegant insights about ellipses. Geometry provides many treats!
