	SMC – March 2016 Date: Sunday, March 6th, 2016 Time: 1 – 3 PM Location: RLM 4.102 (On the UT campus) Speaker: Nicky Reyes and Andy Ma Title: AIME Problems & 1 dimensions, 2 dimensions, and Fractional dimensions Abstract: We will do some interesting AIME problems and then talk about fractional dimension. Lines are one dimensional objects, flat things are two dimensional objects, and of course we live in a world of three dimensional objects but did you know there exist fractional dimension objects? We will discuss Sierpinski's triangle, the history of the study of dimension, and how mathematics allows us to think about objects which have fractional dimension.
	SMMG – April 2016 Date: Saturday, April 9, 2016 Time: 10 AM – noon Location: RLM 4.102 (On the UT campus) Speaker: Prof. Michael Starbird Title: Doughnuts, Dogbones, and Rubber Sheet Geometry Abstract: Most objects in our everyday world are more or less rigid. But with some flexibility in our mind's eye, we can imagine them as stretchable and elastic. That image gives us a whole new potential reality to explore. In such an unreasonably contortable universe, we find many amusing possibilities including the famous discovery that a coffee cup and doughnut are really the same in that elastic world. 	SMMG's Mini Math Camp 2016 Do you like mathematics? Do you like solving interesting, challenging mathematics problems? What about learning about new math? UT Austin's Math Department/Saturday Morning Math Group will be hosting its first 4-session Mini Math Camp this spring! The schedule is: Sun., April 17th 1:00PM - 5:00 PM (Snack Included) --Featuring Dr. Jonathan Hanselman Sat., April 30th 9:00AM - 1:30 PM (Lunch Included) Sun., May 1st 1:00PM - 5:00 PM (Snack Included) Sat., May 7th 9:00AM - 1:30 PM (Lunch Included) --Featuring Dr. Hector Lomeli Each session will consist of 4 blocks of mathematics. A graduate student will lead the participants in doing interesting math problems (AMC, AIME, etc.), teaching new mathematics or applied mathematics, or hosting a small math competition. Several graduate students will help out by mentoring the participants as they learn new content or try challenging problems (as they do at SMMG). You can sign up to participate on Saturdays and/or Sundays (but you should be able to attend both Saturdays and/or both Sundays). Participants should have studied algebra at a minimum, but the content should be challenging even to those that have studied calculus. There is no age/grade requirement.
