Course Organization:
Lecture is TTh 9:30-11 in RLM 5.124.
I will present concepts and examples. YOU ARE ENCOURAGED to ask questions
during class.
Homework will be assigned each Tuesday, and is due in class
the following
Tuesday.
See the official syllabus
for a detailed list of topics. READ AHEAD IN THE BOOK to
get the most out of lectures!!
Grading Policy:
-
Weekly homework counts for 25% of the final grade. Homework
is due at the end of each Tuesday class. Homework is to be handed
in in person. The lowest homework grade will be dropped. Students
are encouraged to work together and to help each other on the homeworks,
but to do the work on their own. ; Each homework is worth 10 points,
5 points for overall completeness, and 5 problems will be graded,
for the remaining 5 points.
-
Two Midterm exams count for 25% each of the final grade.
-
The Final Exam counts for 50% of the final grade. The final exam
will be comprehensive, with a slight emphasis on the last sections.
- Curves: The exam grades will be curved to give a fair distribution
of scores, so as not to penalize the class for difficult exams. As a general
guideline 90+ counts as an A, 80+ as (at worst) a B, 70+ as (at worst) a C
and 60+ as (at worst) a D.
- Out of this 125%, your lowest 25% will be dropped, to determine your
final grade. (If the final exam grade is the lowest, the final will only count %25.)
Grading Scheme:
| Exam 1 |
25% |
| Exam 2 |
25% |
| Final Exam |
50% |
| Homework |
25% |
Make-up policy:
There will be no late homework or make-up quizzes, but your lowest
homeworks and quizzes will be dropped.
There will be no make-up exams. Under extraordinary
circumstances, if you contact me well before the exam,
I may consider a make-up,
but with a possible grade penalty.
