Abstract. We review different models aiming at a quantitative understanding of the functional role of nonlinear excitations in DNA processes. In particular, we discuss the general features any physically meaningful model of nonlinear DNA dynamics should share, and the relevant degrees of freedom; after a survey of the different proposals in the literature, we focus in particular on two recently proposed models, dealing with DNA transcription and denaturation; these models, despite their simplicity, show good agreement with the experience.
