Abstract. This is a revised English version of my earlier paper \cite{L1} deposited in VINITI in 1984. An asymptotic formula for the exponentially small angle of intersection of the stable and unstable manifolds of the fixed hyperbolic point for the standard map is derived provided the parameter $\varepsilon $ tends to zero. This paper was never published but is often referenced. This is the reason why we placed it in mp_arc.
