Abstract. We develop a new approach to the Pirogov Sinai theory of low temperature continuous spin lattice models, substantially simplified compared to the original approach [1986] of Dobrushin and Zahradnik. Our new method is based on a transformation of a continuous spin model into a suitable discrete spin model (of a standard `abstract Pirogov Sinai' type). It uses a`Gaussian transformation' of $\exp(-U)$ for a multiple well potential $U$ and allows to use the available methods of the discrete spin theory. Submitted to AMS Dobrushin Memorial Volume.
