Assignment for Monday, January 30:

I. Read Section 2.2.
- Note that the word "correlation" has a more precise meaning in statistics than in ordinary usage.
- Note the cautions on p. 125
II. Also read the handout Properties of the Correlation Coefficient. Be sure to think about the questions (such as, "Why?") in the handout; I may ask you these questions in class.
III. Do the following exercies to reinforce the reading and for
possible class discussion: 2.21, 2.22 (use software for part (b)),
2.25, 2.29, 2.31, 2.34, 2.37, 2.38, 2.40
IV. Also try one or both of the Correlation Guess applets (linked from the home page).
Note: Wednesday's assignment is fairly long and includes some problems to turn in, so you may want to start early on it.
