Assignments for M 360M/396C Fall 05
REMINDER: You are not permitted to look up solutions
to problems in books or on the web. The goal is to practice figuring
things out.
Thursday, September 8:
Both classes:
- Start working on Problem Set #1
- Continue working on any problems not completely discussed
Tuesday.
M396C only: Hand in journals (You
should have 3 entries.)
(Note: M 360M journals will be handed in Thursday, September 15.)
Tuesday, September 13:
- Review the Guidelines
for Writing Up Problem Solutions.
- Read the handout Sample First and Revised Drafts (handed out
in class Thursday). Be sure to
compare and contrast each first draft and the corresponding revised
draft in detail to note the differences between them.
- Read the Peer
Critiquing Guidelines
- Write up a solution to the Railroad Track Problem, following
the Guidelines for Writing Up Problem Solutions. You may use either a
solution you figured out yourself or jointly with other class
members, or a solution presented in class, but you may not use a solution you obtained in
any other way.
- Bring two copies
of your write-up to class for peer critiquing.
- Continue working on any problems assigned that have not yet
been discussed. (This means Problem Set 1 and problems in the reading
for last Tuesday.)
Thursday, September 15:
Both classes:
- Hand in your revised write-up of the Railroad Track Problem.
Added 9/14: This
problem will be graded as outlined on the Grading
Rubric for Railroad Track Problem.
- Be prepared to discuss any problems (from the Standards or
Problem Set 1) not yet discussed.
M 360M only: Hand in journals. (You should have at least 4
entries.)
Thursday, September 22:
- Do the Cube View worksheet (handed out in class) to discuss.
(This is an exercise in spatial visualization and explaining your
reasoning, both of which are important skills used in problem solving.)
- Continue working on problems not yet discussed.
- M 396C only: Hand in journals.
Tuesday, September 27:
- Look back at any problems not yet discussed, keeping
in mind the Problem Solving handouts from Thursday, Sept. 15 (Problem
Solving Outline and Flow Chart) and Thursday, Sept. 22
(Analyzing/Understanding the Problem, Preliminary Version). [This might
give you material for a journal entry or two!]
- Hand in parts (a) and (b) of Problem 3 of Problem Set #1.
(Jack and Jill)
- Optional: You may also hand in part (c) of this problem for
possible extra credit. Please hand
this in separately from parts (a) and (b).
- Do the worksheet Mirror
Images (I) (passed out in class Thursday) to discuss in class.
- Start on Problem Set #3, keeping in mind the items in the
Analyzing/Understanding the Problem handout.
Thursday, September 29:
- Do the exercises on Mirror Images II ( passed out in class
Tuesday Sept. 27)

- Continue thinking more about the Cube View activity if it is

particular attention to what was done in class Tuesday (Sept. 27.)

- Continue with any unfinished class activities from Thursday.

in class, paying particular attention to how class discussion from
Thursday might be relevant.

according to the Look Backward/Forward handout from Thursday's class,
and write a journal entry about your reflections.
- Suggestion for studying for the exam: Spend some time
looking backward/forward for each problem we have done.

discussed in class.

English (handed out Tuesday). Do the exercises (to discuss in class).

discussed, paying special attention to where symmetry might be used.

- Hand in Problem 1 from Problem Set #5. (Handed out October
25; not available on-line.)
- Write a journal entry looking back/forward at the problem:
If the sum of the digits of an integer is divisible by 3, then the
number is divisible by 3. Pay special attention to "looking forward."
