Numerical Analysis, sometimes called computer mathematics, is concerned with the discovery and evaluation of more efficient procedures for obtaining the numerical solutions of rather complicated mathematical and engineering problems using high-speed digital computers. (Particular attention is currently being given to parallel computers.) The areas of research covered include approximation theory, partial differential equations, large sparse systems of linear and nonlinear equations, and ordinary differential equations. Special concern is given to applications including problems related to fluid flow, heat transfer, and reservoir simulation. The research is carried on by the senior members of the staff with the assistance of graduate students working under their direction. Much of the research is supported by grants from Federal agencies, from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, and from private industry.
This work frequently involves collaborations with researchers from other institutions.
In many cases, work on CNA projects leads to M.A. theses or Ph.D. dissertations.
