Expository writing

Peter Eckersley and I wrote a white paper emphasizing the importance of protecting locational privacy in the face of emerging "location-based" services and outlining various ways to do design such services in ways that respect privacy. Robin Chase and I wrote a related piece for the Huffington Post addressed to schemes to collect "usage taxes" to replace gasoline taxes.

Research papers

Raluca Popa, Hari Balakrishnan, and I have been working on practical implementations of solutions to automated tolling and aggregate vehicular statistics in ways which preserve locational privacy. Our solutions to these problems are very lightweight; they can run on in-car devices such as the EZpass and FasTrak transponders. This work builds on earlier (proof of concept, but impractical) work I did with Abhi Shelat, Lauren Keeler, and Robin Chase.
